Wayside Gardens & Nurseries Pvt. Ltd. is
situated in 6th Mile Tadong, on the outskirts of Gangtok,
Sikkim, India. Set in a seven acre area at an altitude of
3,500 ft (1100 Mts) in the foothills of the Himalayas, the
nursery is blessed with a unique microclimate where
temperate and subtropical plants grow with ease. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Being 4th generation plants people, the
nursery was commercially started by the Pradhan family in
the late 70’s. It has been a labour of love for the whole
family – specially Keshab C Pradhan and son Sailesh Pradhan
for more than three decades, experimenting with newly
introduced plants from the world over. Some of the plants
grown in the nursery are: Orchids of Sikkim and the
Himalayan orchid species, Rhododendrons of Sikkim, azaleas,
landscaping plants like Hemerocallis (Day Lilies),
Agapanthus, Magnolias, Bromeliads, bamboos, ferns etc. These
are just to name a few among the many perennial flowering
plants and shrubs. |

The Nursery campus has probably one of
the largest collection of Orchids in India and also probably
the largest collection of landscaping plants in India. The
Pradhan family and the Wayside Gardens & Nurseries has been
in the forefront in the field of Floriculture in Sikkim and
Horticulture in Sikkim for about a Century. It is one of the
pioneers in terms of introduction and exotic flowering
plants collection, among the flowers and orchid nurseries in
India. |

| |
|
|
| |
Besides, Hybrid Commercial orchids such
as Cymbidiums, Cattleya, Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis fill
many of the greenhouses within the campus. The Nursery has
been in the forefront of hybridizing, introduction and
popularizing some of these orchid hybrids for both
commercial and hobby growers in this part of the world for
the last 3 decades. |

Of late, Citrus fruit plants is a major
interest for the nursery and after trials of numerous
varieties of limes, lemons, Sikkim mandarin, Darjeeling
mandarin, grapefruit etc – the nursery is on the verge of
churning out high quality grafted citrus plants, which we
feel would be instrumental in not only reviving, but also
could bring about the lost glory of orange/mandarin
production in these areas to an even higher tempo. |

These various native and exotic plants
propagated in this beautiful garden is now being offered to
the flower lovers in India through Mail order with a hope to
start online mail order nursery for home gardens – which we
feel, is highly overdue. |
